Diamond Hogs take first road series, ready for week
Date: 2010-03-08T03:31:53.347 Author: Harold McIlvain II Editor note: Arkansas sophomore Tim Carver hit two home runs during a Saturday win and added two more hits during a Sunday loss Number of Views: 129 Arkansas junior pitcher Brett Eibner put together a good performance on the mound looking for a sweep Sunday over the California Bears, but the Razorback offense was shutout for the first time this season in a 6-0 loss.
Eibner (2-1) picked up the loss after allowing just one run, three hits and striking out five in five innings of work.
“The disappointment of the day is that Brett pitched extremely well, and so did their guy,” Arkansas baseball head coach Dave Van Horn said. “Neither of them really deserved a loss.”
It was miscues and back-to-back infield hits followed by a home run that put Arkansas away with a three-run sixth inning. A pair of runs were scored by the Bears in the seventh when they used two errors and just a hit to plate the runs.
“We made mistakes,” Van Horn said. “They did a great job of playing small ball. On the other side, we didn’t make plays.”
After finishing with two home runs in the 9-5 win Saturday, sophomore Tim Carver added a couple of hits Sunday – but it wasn’t enough for the offense that struggled.
The Razorbacks struck out five times and finished with six hits and while the offense Van Horn said didn’t look like the unit that has scored over eight runs a game this year.
“We out went out of the zone and swung at more bad pitches today than we have the past five or six games combined,” Van Horn said. “That is uncharacteristic of what we’ve been doing.”
But with five games this week for the Razorbacks (8-2), the road loss was a learning experience for the team as it heads back to Baum Stadium.
“I think today was a big learning experience for our team,” Van Horn said. “Now we have five games at home. We need to get after it and play with some maturity this week.”
Van Horn said staying competitive while playing some freshmen during the games this week will be important for Razorbacks.
“We’re still going to mix it up and throw some younger pitchers who need some experience,” Van Horn said. “But we need to play well or we’ll get beat.”
