Offense readies during game week

FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas football team continued practice during its first game week Tuesday inside Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. UA, ranked No. 17 in the AP preseason poll, is preparing itself inside the stadium it will open against Tennessee Tech, Saturday at 6 p.m. Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Garrick McGee looks at this year's kickoff as another step in the process of coaching.
"It's always good in the development of a program," Coach McGee said. "Getting our young guys in here when they are young and playing them; they learn the system. They get bigger and stronger. And that's where we are now. We've got to get ready and prepared to execute on game day."
In game planning for Tennessee Tech, Coach McGee noted he not only has respect for the Golden Eagles, but also their coach. TTU head coach Watson Brown was the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma during Coach McGee's playing days (1993-94).
"I have a lot of respect for those guys," Coach McGee said. "(Brown) is a very detailed ball coach and understands both sides of the ball. He did a lot for me as a player and for my coaching career."
Excelling on both sides of the ball is something Arkansas emphasized in preseason camp, with the Razorback defense matching up against the explosive UA offensive unit. Last season, for the first time since joining the league, Arkansas led the Southeastern Conference in scoring offense (36.0) and passing offense (295.5).
While the Razorback passing game starts with preseason first-team All-SEC pick Ryan Mallett, the running back unit features four contributors in sophomore Knile Davis, junior Broderick Green, junior Dennis Johnson and sophomore Ronnie Wingo Jr. Coach McGee likes what all four can do in helping to provide a dynamic offensive attack for Arkansas.
"We like to get them in the role that they do best," Coach McGee said. "Then we'll get them into that slot in the game."
Coach McGee sees the coming week being instrumental in Arkansas' readiness for the beginning of its upcoming campaign.
"It's all about preparation," Coach McGee said. "It's about understanding our game plan and how we want to attack. We are going to continue to learn and prepare."
