Sports  | Diamond Hogs go to Starkfield ... well ... some of them do

It's Hogs versus Dawgs this weekend in Mississippi.

Jarrod McKinney is scheduled to have surgery next week. This week … well … it’s climbing Fayetteville hills on crutches. The good news is he’ll not miss much school. The bad news is, of course, he is gone for the season.

How’d it happen? “I was going for the ball in the outfield. The wind kept blowing the ball further away from me so I stretched out to get it. I knew I was going to miss it so …. I tried to plant my foot to pivot and catch the rebound off the wall at the same time. But … my knee went one way and my body the other.” Ouch.

I believe Jarrod was plum tired of telling that story by the end of the day. His folks are coming. He’s anticipating getting some babying from his mom.

Personally … I cried when I tore mine.

On the upside … scuttlebutt is that Wilkins’ injury may not have been as serious as first thought. You can bet he’s chomping at the bit. The Razorbacks are probably as good a team as any with respect to being able to take some injury hits. We’ll definitely count ourselves good if we can pull off a series win away, though. Thankfully … Coach Van Horn has several players to bring into the lineup.

The Diamond Hogs take on Mississippi State this weekend. The Dawgs are 22 and 18 on the season. At just 3 and 6 in conference play, Mississippi State is the SEC West’s cellar dwellers.

WESTERN DIVISION Conference Overall
School W-L Pct. W-L Pct.
LSU 7-2 0.778 24-4 0.857

Auburn 5-4 0.556 19-10 0.655
Ole Miss 5-4 0.556 21-8 0.724
Alabama 4-5 0.444 19-9 0.679
Mississippi State 3-6 0.333 16-13 0.552

Sorry to hear about McKinney. Body went one way and the foot planted another way is exactly how my son tore his ACL in a HS FB game. A tough injury but with a brace players can return in four months.

DVH is another example about what good leaders can do for a sports program. Here's hoping the BB team can rise to the level of our FB and baseball teams. It looks like it is going to take near 20 years from our peak to the next upswing.

The baseballl team continues to do well and won something like 8-3. Smyly pitched seven good innings. The hitters continued to get some clutch hits with Cox getting another HR. Wilkens is playing again but suspect his leg is still tender.

And,......... Bolsinger back in his familiar role, pitched two effective shutout innings to close the game.

I like the new pitching rotation with our two best pitchers going on Friday and Saturday. Some prefer not to pitch Eibner until Sunday so his arm and being well rested are saved, but I am with DVH on pitching him on Sat. If his arm can't go in the OF, then DH him and play the same CF as we played on Sat.
